Description

A problem with the current composting methods is the significant amount of both time and space they require to remain effective. The Smart Composter is a product that eliminates the difficulties of composting for those who have time or space constraints that hamper their ability to have a well-maintained compost pile.

Background research

There are many factors to consider when creating a project like this, especially the methods currently used to mantain compost piles. There is also necessary research to determine whether a project like this already exists and if there will be a customer base for it.

Design

The Smart Composter is made of 3d printed materials and wood. It uses pH, temperature, and humidity sensors to determine when to add leaves into the composter and Peltier tiles to generate heat which helps the decomposition process.

Discussion

To create our product we did three types of research- we looked into the specific aspects of a compost pile that need to be taken care of so we knew what specifically we needed the Smart Composter to do. We also looked into the market for this product, specifically whether or not something like it already existed.

Code

A large portion of the functionality of the Smart Composter is the code. There are many components that need to work independently as well as in tandem.

Team

Each person on the Smart Composter team played an important role in its creation for capstone. Teamwork was of utmost importance in terms of project completion and functionality.
